Benjamin Thompson Lowne, a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons, voyaged to New South Wales June-September 1862 to study natural history in the Walter Hood

a. Journal, 1862-1863, in the form of chapters, consecutively dated, dealing with experiences or with aspects of natural history. Includes remarks on the voyage relating to marine life, oceanic birds, weather and astronomy. In New South Wales, includes notes on flora and entomology, the Botanic Gardens, Sydney, and places visited near Sydney including the Blue Mountains and Illawarra region. Includes abstract of log of voyage from London to Sydney, June-September 1862, and Sydney to London, 14 December 1862-March 1863 and abstract of journal in New South Wales

b. Printed insertions, being article by Lowne 'Contributions to the natural history of Australian ants' from The Entomologist, September, December 1865 and Francis P. Pascoe, 'List of the described Longicornia of Australia' with manuscript annotations evidently by Lowne
