  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Selwyn was the first Anglican Bishop of New Zealand 1841-68. He travelled widely throughout his vast diocese to promote Christianity among the Maoris and in Melanesia. John Coleridge Patteson, Bishop of Melanesia 1861-71, travelled with Selwyn from England in 1855 to begin mission work amongst the Melanesians. He was killed by natives at Nukapu Island, 1871
  • Scope and Content
    1) Diary kept by Selwyn, 1843 Jan.-1844 Mar. Contains unofficial censuses of many N.Z. districts, 1844, 1851. 2) Letters by Selwyn, 1843-57. Some describe voyages through Melanesia. 3) Letters, 1842-64 by the Bishop's wife, Sarah Selwyn, mainly to the Rev. Edward Coleridge. 4) Photograph of Selwyn, sketch and plan of the Southern Cross mission ship, copies of official despatches, 1864-69, and 23 addresses presented to Selwyn, 1868. 5) Letters, 1861-69 by Bishop Patteson, 6) Papers re the death of Patteson. Includes correspondence between Selwyn and Markham. 7) 3 addresses presented to Sir William Martin, first Chief Justice of New Zealand, 1874
