Charles Burfitt, 1849-1927, was born at Springfield, near Orange. He was a store-keeper at Dubbo before coming to Sydney where he carried on business as an auctioneer. He was a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Australian Historical Society. He published several books on early Australian history and made a particular study of the language and customs of Aboriginal Australians.
