    Leslie William Sutherland, a carpenter of Murrumbeena, Victoria enlisted with 1st Signal Troop (1st Light Horse Brigade) aged 21, 19 Aug. 1914 and embarked from Melbourne on board Transport A10 Karroo, 20 Oct. 1914. He served in Egypt and the Dardanelles, 1914-1916. He then served as a pilot with the 1st Squadron of the Australian Flying Corps in Palestine, later compiling an official history of this squadron and in 1935 publishing a book on it. He was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, 1917 and the Military Cross, 1918. He was appointed Flying Officer (Pilot) in Egypt, Jan. 1919 and returned to Australia on HT Port Sydney, Mar. 1919
