    W. E. Hooker settled in Melbourne in 1857 and worked as a cook to a tailor and as a waiter in various hotels. He married Caroline Isabella Burgess, September 1860
  • Scope and Content
    The diary describes the voyage from Gravesend to Melbourne on board the Planet, 10 April-5 August 1857, and life in Melbourne during the period, with reference to current events as well as family matters. The papers also include copies of letters from Hooker and his family to relations in England, 1857-1860. Also included is a list of the descendants of W. E. Hooker, 1861-1935, and a copy of a letter by Isabella Webster, 1865, describing a journey from Melbourne to Wood's Point, Victoria
