  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir George Dibbs (1834-1904), merchant, parliamentarian and Premier of NSW, was born at Sydney, son of Captain John Dibbs and his wife Sophia Elizabeth. He was educated at St. Philip's School and the Australian College under the Rev. J.D. Lang. After working as a junior clerk with the merchant William Brown & Co., Dibbs joined his brother in J.C. Dibbs & Co, commission agents and merchants. He was elected a member of the NSW Legislative Assembly for the seats of West Sydney (1874-1877), St. Leonards (1882-1885), The Murrumbidgee (1885-1894), and Tamworth (1894-1895). He was Colonial Treasurer (1883-1885), Premier and Colonial Secretary (7-9 Oct. 1885), Premier and Colonial Treasurer (Oct.- Dec. 1885) and Premier and Colonial Secretary (1889, 1891-1894). Dibbs was appointed K.C.M.G. in 1892.
