    Hugh Fairclough sailed as chief officer of the Supply under Charles Smith, to the Gilbert Islands in 1851. At Butaritari Smith exchanged commands with Robert Strachan and returned to Sydney. After this voyage Hugh Fairclough was appointed captain, later made shipping manager, and eventually became the third partner in the firm of Smith, Randell and Fairclough
