    E. H. Fearnside, 1830-1874, joined the Ordinance Department at Wakefield, Yorkshire, 1845. In 1848 he transferred to the Royal Engineers and in 1852 accompanied his regiment to Tasmania. In 1856 he was transferred to New South Wales

    The journal refers to surveying work on railways in the Armidale district, January-March 1858, around Maitland, April-November 1858, and following Fearnside's transfer to Parramatta, on the southern and western railway lines, November 1858-August 1860. It also refers to events in his private life, family affairs, etc. Includes an account of rations used and other expenses throughout the period.
