  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir Henry Normand MacLaurin, 1835-1914, son of James MacLaurin a Scottish schoolmaster, qualified as a doctor at the University of Edinburgh in 1857. He and his brother Rev. J. B. MacLaurin lived at Malaga, 1857-1858. After his brother James' death Normand became a surgeon in the Royal Navy for 13 years. In 1871 he came to Australia, married Eliza Nathan, and established a practice in Sydney. Between then and 1914 he was a Fellow of the Senate, and from 1896 Chancellor of the University of Sydney, and a member of the Legislative Council in New South Wales. He had five sons and a daughter. His fourth son, Henry Normand, was killed at Gallipoli in 1915
