The Australian Club was founded in Sydney in 1838, as a social and literary club for gentlemen. The first clubhouse, leased in 1838 and acquired in 1840, was located at Pulteney Hotel in Bent Street, Sydney. Between 1889 and 1891 the second clubhouse, designed by architect John Kirkpatrick, was built on the present Club site, the corner of Bent and Macquarie Streets, Sydney. In 1969 the Australian Club merged with the New South Wales Club which was located at 31 Bligh Street, Sydney. The Australian Club moved to the Bligh Street premises during 1969 and the Australian Club building was demolished and rebuilt. The Australian Club officially reopened in the new building in March 1973.

Records of the Australian Club which include registers of members, 1891-1925; minute books of the General Committee, House Committee, Furniture Committee, Building and Finance Committee, 1838-1963; nominations for members of committee, 1886-1941; reports and balance sheets, 1890-1905; complaints or suggestion books, 1888-1953; financial records, 1875-1960; correspondence, 1853-196l; and miscellaneous papers re building, finance etc., 1888-1961.
