James Clark Ross entered the navy in 1812 and accompanied W. E. Parry in four expeditions in Arctic regions. In 1831 Ross discovered the magnetic pole. He commanded the Antarctic expedition, 1839-1842 - Scope and ContentAutograph letters signed by Ross, from England, 17 Feb. 1845, 11 May 1857, 21 May 1858 with references to his Antarctic Expedition. The recipient is not named, but is probably Admiral Sir Charles Napier.
