    Charles Francis Laseron, geologist and Antarctic explorer of Sydney was born in Manitowoe, United States of America. He described his occupation as museum collector when he enlisted at Rosebery Park, Sydney in Sept. 1914, and embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board Transport A38 Ulysses on 22 Dec. 1914. He served as a sergeant with the 13th Battalion in Egypt and the Dardanelles, was wounded at Deadman's Ridge, Anzac, 27 Apr. 1915 and hospitalised for three months in England. He was discharged as medically unfit and returned to Australia on the Euripides, Aug. 1916

    Diary begins on board the troopship Ulysses one day out from Melbourne, with retrospective account of experiences since his enlistment 9 Sep. 1914. Describes voyage to Gallipoli, landing and battles, ends on board the Galatea near Alexandria
