The Donnithorne family is believed to be related to Judge Donnithorne of Camperdown Lodge. The judge's jilted daughter is reputed to be the original of Miss Haversham in Charles Dicken's 'Great Expectations'. Rupert Donnithorne was sent to an orphanage after his mother died. After training at the industrial school at H.M.V.S. Nelson he was apprenticed in 1871 to tailor Jesse Smith.
