  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Ewart Bendrey, a telegraphist of Uralla, N.S.W., was born in Armidale, N.S.W. and enlisted at Liverpool aged 22 years, 18 May 1915. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT Karoola, 16 June 1915 and served in the 2nd Battalion, 6th Reinforcement, Australian Imperial Forces, at Gallipoli and in France. He was wounded in action 26 Apr. 1916, losing his left eye, was hospitalised in Egypt, France and England and embarked on HT Marathon for return to Australia, 8 Aug. 1916
