Founded in July 1877 as the National Shipwreck Relief Society of N.S.W., the society changed its name to Shipwreck Relief and Humane Society in 1899. In 1902 the prefix Royal was approved. The original aims were to assist dependants of N.S.W. seamen killed or seriously injured on duty; to relieve crews of vessels wrecked in or near N.S.W. waters; and to make awards for acts of bravery in saving human life. Later it extended its activities to assist old, sick or disabled seamen
