In 1876 he came to Australia on the Northam to visit his children in Melbourne and Sydney - Scope and ContentDiaries up to 1876 contain many references to correspondence with his sons and daughter in Australia, who were connected with the country press in N.S.W. Diaries after 1876 describe his voyage on the 'Northam', 12 Oct 1876 - 9 Jan 1877, and his life with his family in Melbourne and Sydney.
