  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Pioneer navigator of the Murray River. He was born near Edinburgh, Scotland and sailed his father's ships until 1852 when he obtained a promise of 2500 pounds from the South Australian government to navigate the Murray. In 1853 he formed the River Murray Navigation Company which traded on the Murray untio 1858. Cadell continued trading on the rivers until 1861 when he went to New Zealand. Between 1867 and 1868 he explored part of the Gulf of Carpentaria. He was late engaged in pearling off the north west coast and then in the Arafura Sea, where he was murdered by his native crew in 1879

    Newspaper clippings, documents and some correspondence relating largely to Cadell's navigation of the Murray and his explorations of Northern Australia. 1) Three books of newspaper cuttings 1852-60 and 1867-68 on Cadell's trade on the Murray and his Northern Territory Expedition. 2) Documents relating to navigation of the Murray. 3) Memorials and addresses outlining the life of Cadell and his explorations in Australia
