In accordance with nineteenth century practices of collecting, David Scott Mitchell accumulated papers, letters, and envelopes as examples of signatures and handwriting of prominent individuals. This material was then placed in albums or scrapbooks for display and safekeeping. Some of these volumes were acquired by Mitchell from the sale of Henry Parkes' (former Premier of New South Wales) collection of autographed letters.
