  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Maria Jane Scott was a painter, lithographer, and novelist. Born in the West Indies to Colonel George Barney and Portia Henrietta (nee Peale), Maria commenced art lessons with Conrad Martens when her family moved to Sydney. She exhibited two of her works at the 1854 Australian Museum Exhibition, and was awarded a medal for her watercolour views at the 1862 London International Exhibition. In 1838 she married Captain David Charles Frederick Scott of Bengalla at Muswellbrook. -- Reference: Dictionary of Australian artists / Joan Kerr, editor.
