    Many sketches are annotated with descriptive notes about nautical location, terrain, and dramatic weather conditions as well as colour details

    Many drawings have a paper label with an auction number on the reverse.
    No.15 bears watermark, "Smiths & Alli / 1840"
    Nos. 42-56 are composed on leaves of a notedbook (ruled pages) and have text in the form of journal entries on the reverse. This material may have been in a volume format.
