    This book of hours is an example of the Rouen School which flourished in north-west France from the end of the fifteenth century.
  • Scope and Content
    Text: Latin, calendar in French. Includes: calendar; gospel sequences; Hours of the Virgin; Hours of the Cross; Hours of the Holy Ghost; penitential psalms; litany; Vigils of the Dead; Obsecro te; O intemerata; Stabat Mater; commemorations; additional prayers.
    Decoration: Decorative borders, the dominant motive being a twisting acanthus pattern supporting a variety of birds and gargoyles.

    18 small miniatures and 13 large miniatures. The subjects of the small miniatures are: the Virgin and Child; Trinity; God the Father; God the Son; God the Holy Ghost at Pentecost; St Michael; St John the Baptist; St John the Evangelist; St Peter and St Paul; St Stephen; St Lawrence; St Sebastian; St Nicholas; St Anthony; St Catherine; St Margaret; St Barbara; St Mary Magdalen. The large miniatures are framed by architectural designs incorporating columns and arcades and depict: the four evangalists; Annunciation; Visitation; Nativity; Annunciation to the shepherds; Adoration of the Magi; Presentation; Massacre of the Innocents; Coronation of the Virgin; Crucifixion; Pentecost; King David with his harp; Death stabs young lovers.
