Charles Thomas Philippe Ulm, 1897-1934, pioneer aviator, flew with Charles Kingsford-Smith on their record-breaking circumnavigation of Australia in 1927, on the first trans-Pacific flight from the United States to Australia in May 1928 for which they were both awarded the Air Force Cross, and the first trans-Tasman flight from Sydney to Christchurch in September 1928. In December 1928 they formed Australian National Airways Ltd., which folded in 1933. Ulm was lost at sea near Hawaii on a flight from Oakland, California to Australia in December 1934.
