    Appears to be an enlarged photograph overpainted in pastel, possibly the work of J. Hubert Newman, whose portraits were coloured by his brother E. O. Newman in the 1870s. Reference: Dictionary of Australian Artists / Joan Kerr (1992).

    Attributed to E. O. Newman after comparison with ML 788 which is signed "E.O.N."
