    George Bell was born at Shelford, Victoria in 1882 and raised on the property "Alma". He was the eldest son of Lewis and Annie Bell (nee Armstrong) who were pastoralists in the Hay-Booligal area. George Bell attended Scots College, Bellevue Hill, Sydney, from 1898 to 1900 and was Dux and Senior Prefect in 1900. In 1901 he began Medical studies at Sydney University and graduated with a Bachelor of Medicine in 1906.
    George Bell's professional career as a doctor was devoted to public welfare. He had a life-long association with Sydney Hospital working in various roles including Junior and Senior Resident Medical Officer, Honorary Assistant Surgeon, Honorary Surgeon, and member of the Board of Directors.
    From 1916 to 1919 he served in France and was awarded the O.B.E. (Military Division) for his services as a medical officer in First World War. During the Second World War he was appointed Surgeon Captain, R.A.N.R.
    Throughout his career, Dr Bell was President of the N.S.W. Council of British Medical Association from 1931-1932, Vice-President of the Federal Council 1939-1944, and President of the Royal Australasia College of Surgeons 1949-1951. Additionally, he was a visiting surgeon at the Prince of Wales Hospital 1919-1947 and a consultant surgeon to the Repatriation Department. His community interest includes support for the Royal Flying Doctor Service being instrumental in the establishment of the base and Broken Hill, and President of the Council of the N.S.W. Bush Nursing Association.
    In 1967 he was the recipient of the C.B.E (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for his services to medicine. -- Reference : taken from papers
