  • General note

Tusculum was bought at auction in September 1848 by William Long, an ex-convict and self-made wine and spirit merchant. Long resided there with his family from February 1852, once Bishop Broughton had moved out, until his death in October 1876.
During Long's ownership, the shingle roof was replaced with slate and extensions made to the south-eastern corner of the residence and the stables.
In 1906, Orwell and Alfred Henry Phillips, both professional investors, bought Tusculum. Orwell had been born in and named after another of the Darlinghurst villas, Orwell House. Five years later Orwell bought Alfred's share in the property and continued to live in the house until he sold it in 1927. During Phillips' occupancy he made additions to the south-western corner of the building.
