  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Professor Jules Ginswick (1914-2001), who was born and educated in London, taught economic history at the University of Sydney from 1950 until his retirement. Between 1971 and 1973 he was editor of the Australian Economic History Review. Ginswick compiled a ‘Select bibliography of pamphlets on Australian economic and social history, 1830-1895’, 1961. He also contributed to several books on economic history including ‘Labour and the poor in England and Wales, 1849-1851: the letters to the Morning chronicle from the correspondents in the manufacturing and mining districts, the towns of Liverpool and Birmingham, and the rural districts’, edited, with an introduction by J.     After his retirement, Ginswick continued to research and compile economic statistics relating to the colonial history of New South Wales. He died on 9 April 2001.

    Jules Ginswick papers, ca. 1951-1999. The collection predominantly comprises statistics compiled by Ginswick concerning New South Wales economic history from 1788 to 1850, as well as the history of the Australian Gaslight Company from 1837 to 1966. Material includes handwritten and typescript notes and tables; correspondence; draft book chapters; photocopies of reports, statistics and financial records; pamphlets; brochures and black & white photographs.
