James Francis Hurley, generally known as Captain Frank Hurley (1885-1962) was born in Sydney, NSW. A professional photographer and author, he was official photographer to the first Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911-1913) and the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1916) as well as official photographer to the AIF in 1917-18 and in WWII. His Antarctic and war photography, both photographs and films, made his name but he also photographed Australia extensively and published many photographic books on Australia.
