    Xavier Herbert (1901-1984) wrote for newspapers and journals such as Smith's Weekly and the Sydney Sun before publishing his first novel, Capricornia in 1938. After some years other novels followed including Soldiers' Women (1961) and Poor Fellow My Country (1975) which won the Miles Franklin Award. Geoffrey Cains is a collector of Australian literary manuscripts.

    Bound volume. Includes:
    1963; Letter received by Douglas Stewart from Xavier Herbert dated 5 May 1963, in which he compliments Stewart on his introduction to the Sirius edition of Herbert's novel Capricornia, and requests that his collection of short stories, Larger than life, be dedicated to his brother David. 2 pages.
    1963; Letter received by Douglas Stewart from Xavier Herbert dated 1 July 1963, written to Stewart after Herbert has seen the galley proofs of Larger than Life. Herbert expresses his concern about the arrangement of the stories, and speculates about the way the stories will be received. 2 pages.
    1990-1991; Three letters received by Geoffrey Cains from Frances de Groen, relating to Herbert's life and work.
