  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The Sydney Turf Club (STC) founded in 1943, was the youngest of Australia's principal race clubs. It was formed following an Act passed by the New South Wales parliament called the Sydney Turf Club Act. The Act gave the club the power to hold 62 race meetings a year at the tracks and empowered it to wind up other proprietary clubs that still existed in the Sydney area through a special Racing Compensation Fund.

The Australian Jockey Club (AJC) founded in January 1842 and the Sydney Turf Club co-existed as independent bodies since the early 1940s, but merged to become The Australian Turf Club (ATC) in February 2011.

Robert Sydney Harris (1879-1946) pioneer land owner and grazier owned a rural property at Barragan, north-east of Mudgee in New South Wales (NSW). He was a life member of the Royal Agricultural Society of Sydney. His father Sir Mathew Harris was a member of the Legislative Assembly of NSW, and represented the Dennison Division of Sydney from 1892-1902. His brother Albert G Harris was also a grazier of Barragan and served at the front with the British artillery.
