  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Douglas Stewart was born in Eltham, New Zealand in 1913. After working as a newspaper journalist he moved to Sydney in 1938 where he became literary editor of The Bulletin and, in 1961, literary adviser to the publishers Angus & Robertson. He published several volumes of poetry including Green lions (1936), Sun orchids (1953), Rutherford (1962) and Collected poems 1936-67 (1967). His verse play for radio, Fire on the snow, was first performed in 1941 and was followed by 5 other plays including Ned Kelly (1943) and Shipwreck (1946). He also published a volume of short stories, A girl with red hair (1947) and several volumes of reminiscences and criticism. He was awarded the OBE in 1960 and appointed AO in 1979. He married the artist Margaret Coen in 1945 and a daughter, Margaret (Meg), was born in 1948. Douglas Stewart died in 1985.
    Joseph Tishler, (1871-1956), poet, was born on 18 March 1871 at Dunedin, New Zealand. He contributed verses to the Bulletin under the pseudonym "Bellerive.
