    Arthur A. D. Bayldon (1865-1958), poet, was born in Leeds, England and came to Australia in 1889. He contributed poems and articles to the Bulletin as well as having several books of his poetry published. Bayldon was also a champion swimmer who earnt money by performing amazing swimming feats before a crowd.
  • Scope and Content
    1948, 1951; Two notes by Arthur Bayldon to Bill Fitzhenry, secretary of the Bulletin, recalling his earliest published poems and 'Red Page' articles in the Bulletin. Bayldon mentions a bookmark on which were printed two of his poems, originally issued with the 1901 edition of Bayldon's poems. A copy of this bookmark has been pasted into the album.
    1932; Letters (11) sent by Arthur Bayldon to John Le Gay Brereton ("My dear friend") concerning the publication of his 'Collected Poems' and the considerable (mainly financial) difficulties he encountered.
    [Jan. 1930]; 'Lobelia', an original ms. poem by Arthur Bayldon, signed by the author. Dated in pencil by a different hand.
    7 Jan. 1901; Typescript letter from Arthur Bayldon to a subscriber, signed by Bayldon with a ms. postscript. The letter concerns the despatch of and payment for his latest book of poems.
    unknown; Photographic copies of two photographs of Arthur Bayldon, the originals of which were both signed and dated by Bayldon, 1897 and 1911.
    1898, 1900, 1901; Two cuttings from the Bulletin's 'Red Page' concerning Arthur Bayldon's swimming prowess, and one cutting from the Bulletin of Bayldon's poem 'Australian Spring'.
    1910; Photocopy of ms. of 'Marlowe', a sonnet by Arthur Bayldon, signed by the author and inscribed to Mrs Lala Fisher. The sonnet was Bayldon's first contribution to the Bulletin, published in ca. 1895.

    This album is believed to have been assembled and bound by Harry F. Chaplin. The bookplate of Geoffrey Cains, a subsequent owner, is adhered to the inside front cover.
