James Coutts Crawford (1817-1915) settled in Australia, following his retirement from the Royal Navy in the 1830s. After working overlanding stock between Sydney and Adelaide, he visited New Zealand, where he lived from 1841 to 1844. On his return to Australia he resided at the residence Forest Lodge in The Glebe in Sydney, where he made a number of watercolours. In 1845 he purchased Eton Vale, a sheep property on the Darling Downs near Toowoomba in Queensland. On his travels around Australia and New Zealand he made sketches and watercolours of the scenery and also, frequently, of rock formations and geological features.
