  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Eleanor May Moore (1875-1949) became involved in the peace movement during WWI and went on to be an uncompromising, energetic pacifist all her life. At various stages of her life she was international secretary of the Sisterhood of International Peace (which later became the Australian section of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom), executive-member of the Australian Peace Alliance which advocated negotiated peace, and she campaigned against conscription in 1916 and 1917. An inspiring speaker, Moore travelled Australia to address various pacifist groups. In 1928 and 1930 she represented the WILPF at the Pan Pacific Union Women's conferences in Honolulu. Sometimes in conflict with the WILPF and other pacifist organisations, she opposed trade boycotts, Communism and the manufacture and use of atomic bombs. "The Quest for Peace", a semi-autobiographical work by Moore was published posthumously
