  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Samuel Phineas Lewis (1901-1976) was born in Sydney. He entered the NSW Education Dept. in 1921 as a teacher. He joined the NSW Teachers Federation in the same year and became an active member, occupying numerous positions and rising to President in the early 1960s. Lewis was from the political left wing and it was during his presidency of the Federation that the organisation became markedly left wing in its attitudes. Lewis represented Australian teachers in international organisations and conferences. In 1947 the Australian Govt. appointed him a delegate to the UNESCO Conference in Mexico City. He was also the Teachers Federation rep at the same conference which caused political controversy, as did other aspects of his career.

  • Scope and Content
Lewis and his tour group including possibly his wife Ethel visiting temples, shrines, Chinese opera, factories, wharves, schools, offices, lakes, monuments etc. in China and probably Hong Kong as well as the USSR
  • General note

Though none of the locations or individuals are identified, Lewis can be identified in most shots as the oldest person, aged about 60, with thick-rimmed black spectacles and a camera on a strap around his neck (identification based on examination of a passport photo held at MLMSS 5223 Box 1)
