  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Olive Lawson was married to one of Alfred Hill's grandsons, Richard Anthony ('Tony') Pollett. Tony Pollett was the youngest of three children of Elsa Hinemoa Hill, daughter of Alfred Hill.
Alfred Hill, composer, conductor, violinist and teacher, was born in Melbourne in 1869 and spent his formative years in New Zealand. He received his musical training at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig from 1887 to 1891. He married Sarah Brownhill Booth in 1897 and they had three children, Tristan, Isolde and Elsa. In 1916, Hill became the first professor of harmony and composition at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music and he remained on the staff until the end of 1934. In 1921, Hill divorced his wife and married Mirrie Solomon. He died in 1960.
Mirrie Hill (nee Solomon), composer, pianist and teacher, was born in Sydney in 1889. She won a scholarship to become one of the first students at the NSW State Conservatorium. After graduating, Mirrie was invited to join the staff as teacher of harmony and aural studies. She also examined for the Australian Music Examinations Board. Mirrie Hill died in 1986.
