  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

In 1796 the Missionary Society, later called the London Missionary Society, purchased the ship 'Duff' to take missionaries to the South Seas. The ship arrived in Tahiti in 1797. The following year a group of missionaries, including Rowland Hassall and his family, decided that it was unsafe to remain in Tahiti. They were taken to Sydney by Captain Charles Bishop on the 'Nautilus'. On its second voyage in 1799 the 'Duff' was captured by a French privateer.
  • Scope and Content
Circular letter issued by the Missionary Society giving the first news to reach England of the abandonment of the Tahitian mission in 1798. Printed by T. Gillet for T. Chapman. The newsletter comprises 3 pages of printed text, with the fourth page addressed in manuscript to W. H. Brown of St George's Fields. The circular reproduces four letters concerning the Tahitian mission, and one from Buenos Aires regarding the capture of the 'Duff'.
