  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Alfred Hill, composer, conductor and violinist, was born in 1870 in Melbourne. In 1872, the family moved to Auckland, New Zealand and then to Wellington in 1875. Hill's first composition was 'The Organist', believed to have been written when he was twelve. It was first performed in Wellington in 1886. During 1887-91, Hill studied at the Royal Conservatory in Leipzig. He became the first professor of harmony and composition at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music in 1916. Alfred Hill died in Sydney in 1960.
    Mabel Hill, sister of Alfred Hill, was an artist. She married John McIndoe, a publisher in Dunedin who printed several of Alfred Hill's early compositions.

    Photocopy of music manuscript of 'The Organist' / music by Alfred F. Hill and words by Marcella Walker. 1 score for voice and piano (4 pp.). Words in the hand of Mabel Hill. Music probably in the hand of Mabel Hill. With frontispiece drawing by Mabel Hill, dated 10 Dec. 1886. Frontispiece is inscribed 'To My Dear Mother with fondest love from her son'. Frontispiece is also annotated 'The first song of mine composed as a boy A.H.' and 'Illustrated by Sister Mabel'.
