  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

This volume of verse and correspondence is one of five known versions compiled for various members of the Heywood family. It includes prose and verse collected or composed by Nessy (Hester) Heywood, her friends and sisters, and also copies of the correspondence of Nessy and other family members following Peter Heywood's arrest for his alleged role in the mutiny against William Bligh on H.M.S. Bounty. The volume seems to have been compiled by Mary Heywood, the eldest of the Heywood children, although, as Mary acknowledges, it is `...principally the Composition of my beloved Sister Nessy Heywood.' (p. 309). It was passed to Mary's niece, Bessy Fleetwood, the daughter of Edwin Holwell Heywood, Peter Heywood's younger brother.
Peter Heywood made his first voyage as a Midshipman on board the H.M.S. Bounty under the command of Lieutenant William Bligh. The Bounty sailed from England in December 1787 and arrived in Tahiti in October 1788 where they remained for six months. On 20 April 1789, after sailing from Tahiti, Bligh lost the Bounty in a mutiny led by Fletcher Christian.
Peter Heywood remained with the mutineers on board the Bounty which sailed first to Tahiti, then to Pitcairn Island. Heywood was one of a group of fourteen who remained on Tahiti until the arrival of H.M.S. Pandora, sent in search of the mutineers, in March 1791. Heywood was arrested by Captain Edward Edwards as a mutineer. He survived the shipwreck of the Pandora in the Endeavour Straits, off the coast of Queensland, on 29 August 1791 and arrived in England, via Batavia and the Cape of Good Hope, in June 1792.
On 12 September 1792, Heywood and the other Bounty prisoners were brought before a court-martial. On 18 September all the mutineers were sentenced to death. Heywood was granted an unconditional Royal Pardon on 15 October 1792.
Heywood's well connected family had lobbied intensely for his release, particularly his sister Nessy and uncles J. M. Heywood and Commodore Thomas Pasley. Pasley had secured the services of Mr A. Graham to represent Heywood, along with Francis Const. Peter Heywood was reunited with Nessy in London, on 29 October 1792, before returning to the Isle of Man.
Heywood remained in the Royal Navy, rising to the rank of Captain before his retirement in 1816. Nessy died in September 1793, less than a year after Peter Heywood's release.
