Dr. Ruth Rae is a grand daughter of Fred Tomlins. During the course of historical research into her family Dr. Rae transcribed the diaries and letters of Fred Tomlins compiled in 'The Price of Peace'.

Fred Tomlins was an Australian farmer from Narromine, NSW when war was declared in August 1914. His wartime journey was remarkable for two reasons; firstly, he survived the four years of war and secondly, he recorded his daily experiences in a number of diaries - all survived. The Price of Peace is an edited version of Fred's daily life from when he was a trooper with the First Australian Light Horse during his time at Gallipoli, Romani and El Arish to the time he was an Intelligence Officer during the Battle of Beersheba. Fred was a seasoned soldier when the Light Horse finally made its way to Jerusalem and Megiddo. He was joined in Egypt by his sister, Jessie, who was a nurse at the 14th Australian General Hospital and his younger brother, Will, who also enlisted in the Light Horse.

'The Price of Peace: The diaries of Fred Tomlins, First Australian Light Horse, World War One' was published in 2012, by Ruth Rae Consultancies.
'To all at home ... letters from a Lighthorseman' was published in 2012 and is the personal story of Fred's experiences as recounted to those he loved. This publication is dedicated to Arthur Easton, who was instrumental in ensuring the diaries were placed with the State Library of NSW.
