George Arnold Wood (1865-1928), the eldest child of George Stanley Wood, was educated at Owens College, Manchester and Balliol College, Oxford. In 1891 he became the first Challis Professor of History of the University of Sydney, a position he held for the remainder of his life. His major research work was ‘The Discovery of Australia’ (London, 1922) and he also wrote ‘The Voyage of the Endeavour’ (Melbourne, 1925). In 1898 he married Eleanor Madeline Whitfeld (1873-1967), a former student of his at the University of Sydney. She later taught at Ascham School and became prominent in the Peace Movement. They had one daughter and three sons, one of whom, Frederick Lloyd Whitfeld Wood, became Professor of History at Victoria University in New Zealand.
