Arthur Henry Garnsey (1872-1944) was born at Windsor, N.S.W., son of the Reverend Charles Frederick Garnsey (1828-1894). He graduated B.A., 1894, and M.A., 1896 from the University of Sydney. Ordained priest in 1898, he was chaplain at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School, 1899-1905, and canon of St. Peter's Cathedral, Armidale, N.S.W. He served as warden of St. Paul's College, University of Sydney, from 1916 until his death. Concurrent with the wardenship Garnsey was co-founder and scribe of the interdenominational Heretics' Club, 1920-1944; examining chaplain to the archbishops of Sydney from 1918; a canon of St. Andrew's Cathedral from 1928; and vice-president of the Friendship with Russia League, 1941-1944. His son, David Arthur Garnsey, a former Bishop of Gippsland, wrote the biography Arthur Garnsey: A Man for Truth and Freedom (1985). A. H. Garnsey married twice: first, in 1901, Bertha Edith Frances Benn, who died in 1919; and secondly, in 1922, Ann (Nance) Stafford Smairl.
