  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Jean Stewart (1936- ) is a descendant of missionaries Francis Oakes (1770-1844), Rowland Hassall (1768-1820) and William Shelley (1774-1815), all of whom travelled together to the South Seas on the London Missionary Society ship the 'Duff' in 1796. 'The Hassall Family: Celebrating 200 Years in Australia 1798-1998', co-written by Jean Stewart, was published in 1998 during the Hassall family bicentenary celebrations. Jean Stewart has undertaken extensive historical and genealogical research on the Oakes family, the Shelley family and the Bean family. In the course of her research into the Shelley family Jean Stewart became aware of the importance of Elizabeth Bean (1782-1878), wife of William Shelley, and particularly her work with the Native Institution at Parramatta. Her two unpublished manuscripts include detailed historical and genealogical information concerning both the Shelley and Bean families.
