Howard Smith Limited was founded in 1854 as William Howard Smith and Sons Pty Ltd. The company developed into one of Australia’s major shipping companies and industrial enterprises. In 1901 the company became Howard Smith Company Ltd and in 1914 Howard Smith Limited. Australian Steamships Limited, Australian Sugar Company Limited, Caledonian Collieries Limited and Western Districts Steamship Company Limited were subsidiaries. The companies' major interests are in shipping, mining and the sugar industry.
