  • General note

When this watercolour was painted, in 1847, Oswald Brierly was the manager of Boyd Town and East Boyd. In his journal, on 28 October 1847, he noted 'worked at a drawing of E Boyd" : ref. A 541 Mitchell Library Manuscripts collection.

The stone cottage on the bluff overlooking the bay was Brierly's residence, known as 'Merton'. It was demolished early in the 20th century to make way for a much larger home, 'Edrom', erected by J. R. Logan c. 1913.

The watercolour appears to be the basis of John Carmichael's etching "East Boyd. N.S.W.", which was published in W.H. Wells', "A Geographical Dictionary, or Gazetteer of the Australian colonies...", Sydney, 1848, opp. p.69.
In this watercolour Brierly appears to have contracted the beach in the foreground which is in fact several hundred metres long. It is now known as Fisheries Beach.
