  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John G. Collins was a Captain in the 13th Dragoon Guards regiment in Madras, India. Collins took leave from his regiment in 1833 and travelled to New South Wales with the intention of arranging for the supply of Australian bred horses, know as 'Walers', as remounts to the army in India. Collins was the first to embark on this trade with his first consignment leaving New South Wales in 1834. Eventually it grew into a major export trade with over one hundred and twenty thousand horses being sent to allied armies during World War I. Collins was involved in the trade into the 1840s. In order to finance the venture Collins entered a co-partnership with William Hart of London. With a line of credit raised by the two men in London Collins travelled to New South Wales to purchase the horses and arrange early consignments. Additionally he purchased a lease on land at Petersham and at a later time acquired land at the Kangaroo Valley. The venture did not realise the anticipated profits and William Hart sent his son William Hamilton Hart to New South Wales in 1842 to protect his investment. After William Hart's death in the late 1840s a court case was brought in the Supreme Court of New South Wales by John G. Collins against William Hart's two sons, William Hamilton Hart and Thomas Frederick Hart, concerning the assets of the co-partnership.
