    110 chromolithographs and proof plates (1 album) - black and white, colour - 41.9 x 30 x 5.5 cm
  • Scope and Content
Large folio, with 110 double page and folded (some backed on linen) colour lithograph & wood engraved proof plates, bound in half morocco and cloth boards. Spine more recently re-bound.

Album comprises proof plates and colour separations plates for a number of colour supplements, or chromolithographs, mostly those issued with the Illustrated Australian News in 1882 and 1883. Although the album appears to have been compiled for Joseph Cowan Syme, whose family published the Illustrated Australian News, nearly all the plates were printed under the supervision of Samuel Calvert whose signature, approving a pull, can be seen at the bottom of many of these plates.

The album shows show how chromolithographs were produced by combining a number of separate plates - each printing a different colour. With careful registration of all the different colour plates, a full colour image could be produced. Chromolithographs were often a combination of lithographic and wood engraved plates.

The album includes, from the Illustrated Australian News: ‘Illustrated Australian News Christmas Number’ 1880; S. Bennett ‘The first Ride’ (August 1882); S. Bennett ‘After the last race’ (November 1882); S. Bennett ‘A Council of War’ (December 1882); ‘At the Creek’ April 1883; ‘The prospector’ (August 1883); Nicholas Chevalier ‘Will you buy?’ (November 1883).

The album also includes some chromolithographs not apparently published in the Illustrated Australian News, such as J. W. Curtis ‘The Teamsters' Christmas Eve’; ‘Australian Flowers’; ‘The Leader Almanac 1880’ The Leader December 1879; ‘The Bushman's Dream’ The Leader, December 1882.
  • General note

The Illustrated Australian News was published by David Syme & Co.
This album would appear to be a presentation album of the colour printing work of David Syme & Co. However the colour printing was itself largely done by Charles Troedel and Ferguson & Mitchell.
  • Signatures / Inscriptions

Titled blocked on spine - not contemporary
Embossed on front cover 'J.C. Syme'.
A number of the plates have been signed and dated by Calvert - some of these signatures have been trimmed in binding.
