  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Gerard Windsor, author, reviewer and literary commentator, was born in Sydney in 1944. Educated by the Jesuits at St Ignatius College Riverview, he became a Jesuit novice at eighteen, but left seven years later. He graduated BA (Hons) from the Australian National University and MA (Hons) from Sydney University. He has worked as an English Tutor at the University of New South Wales and an editor in the television subtitling unit of the Special Broadcasting Service.

    Windsor has been awarded a number of Literature Board grants: New Writer's Grant, 1978; General writing Grant, 1984; and Senior Writer's Fellowship, 1986, 1988, 1996-1999. He completed a six week residence at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre, Annaghmakerrig, Ireland, in 1985, returning briefly in 1993. He was a member of the Patrick White Award Panel, 1987-1989, and of the Library Council of New South Wales, 1987-1997. He has been a contributing editor for the Jesuit magazine Eureka Street since its first publication in 1991.

    Windsor has published three collections of short stories, The Harlots Enter First (1982), Memories of the Assassination Attempt (1985) and The Mansions of Bedlam : Stories and Essays (2000), a novella That Fierce Virgin (1998), and three volumes of autobiographical memoir, Family Lore (1990), later published as the revised edition I'll Just Tell You This, Heaven Where the Bachelors Sit (1996) and I Asked Cathleen to Dance (1999). Windsor's many short stories have appeared in a number of anthologies, magazines and major newspapers, as have his reviews and review articles.

    This collections further documents Gerard Windsor's literary vocation, including his correspondence with editors, publishers and fellow writers, and literary manuscripts for his essays, short stories, articles and reviews, as well as for his books The Harlots Enter First (1982), I Asked Cathleen to Dance (1999), Heaven Where the Bachelors Sit (1996) and The Mansions of Bedlam : Stories and Essays (2000).
