It is not certain that Matthew Flinders owned this sextant. Sextants on the Investigator were supplied by Edward Troughton. It is possible that this sextant was provided by Sir William Matthew Flinders Petrie to assist sculptor William Robert Colton in his design of the Flinders sculpture which was unveiled in front of the Mitchell Library in 1925.
