  • General note

This watercolour of Port Jackson, looking down the Harbour from Vaucluse towards the town of Sydney, was painted by Westall - landscape artist on the Investigator expedition - in 1804 in Asia, and is presumably either a copy of an earlier drawing, or worked up from preliminary sketches made in 1802/03. Westall left the Investigator after the wreck of the Porpoise in 1803.

The drawing has been squared up with pencil lines to prepare it for copying. Although close to it, it does differ from his engraving "View of Port Jackson ..." which he published in his "Views of Australian Scenery", London, 1814
