  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Weston Advertising Pty. Ltd., established in Sydney in 1901 by renowned commercial artist Harry J. Weston as probably Australia’s first ‘creative boutique’ advertising agency. Harry Weston was joined by Claude Willmot, obtaining an office in Phoenix Chambers, 160 Pitt Street. From here, Claude edited and published ‘The Theatre’, a monthly journal. Lionel Norton, a brewer from London, bought into the business and William (Billy) Oliver Richards joined the group in 1903, eventually buying out the partners and becoming sole owner in 1905. Harry J. Weston joined Hollander and Govett and the Sydney Bulletin, designing many significant World War I posters and billboards on prominent display around Sydney and seems to have played no further part in the company that bears his name. The company, under Billy Richards' management, gained new commissions and boasted contracts with many famous brands including Ardath Tobacco, Berger Paints, His Masters Voice, Leyland Motors, McWilliam’s Wines, Paramount Pictures, Royal Agriculture Society of NSW, Studebaker Corporation and Wolsley Motors. Weston advertisements were published in most major Sydney journals, magazines and newspapers. In 1979 the company merged with the Schofield Serbon Baker agency and moved to North Sydney. In 1983 the company was still in business, a member of the Fortune Communications Group.
